GONDWANA NAMIBIA SELF-DRIVE TOUR

Embark on this Namibia Safari for 11 days with Gondwana Collection Namibia, following the classic route. After collecting your automatic 4×4 rental, head south to the Kalahari Desert where you will enjoy trails in the desert and the unique flora and fauna found here. Continue south to the Sossusvlei area and see the red sand dunes that make this part of the world famous. Head towards the coast and spend 2 nights exploring Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Follow the Skeleton coast for a few hours before heading inland to the Palmwag area in Damaraland where you will spend a morning tracking rhinos. 

End off this Gondwana Namibia Self Drive Tour with 3 nights in Etosha where you can spend your days driving through the park or walking in the area around the lodge. Spend hours overlooking an active waterhole, where elephants, rhinos, zebra, giraffes, gemsbok and more come to drink.

Day by Day itinerary

Days 1 to 2 – Kalahari Anib Lodge, Kalahari

After collecting your car rental you will head south out of Windhoek and into the Kalahari Desert.  Spend 1 night at Kalahari Anib Lodge, exploring the area. 
Take a walk on the trails around the lodge, keeping your eyes open for springbok, zebra and wildebeest and take the chance to breathe in the character and energy of this distinctive area, feeling closer to the land. 

Explore the Gondwana Kalahari Park on the sunset drive and celebrate life atop a red Kalahari dune. Drink in the beauty of the Kalahari where gemsbok flourish and sociable weavers build gargantuan nests atop camelthorn trees. The optimum time to experience the Kalahari colours is when the sun dips in the late afternoon and lights up the sand as if glowing from an inner fire. 

Providing an oasis in the desert for groups, individual travellers and campers, Kalahari Anib Lodge is a relaxed and down-to-earth stopover for a taste of Kalahari. Spend 1 night here on a dinner bed and breakfast basis, with the sundowner excursion, included.

Days 2 to 4 – Namib Desert Lodge, Sossusvlei

After breakfast head towards Sossusvlei for 2 nights at the Namib Desert Lodge. Spend your afternoon on arrival exploring the areas hiking and biking trails. Enjoy the quiet at Namib Desert Lodge away from the bustle around Sesriem, 60km away. Ideal for groups

Enjoy a guided half-day excursion to the highest dunes on Earth at Sossusvlei. They form part of the spectacular Namib Sand Sea, which was declared a World Heritage site in 2013. Including brunch, refreshments, and entrance fees to the National Park. 

Namib Desert Lodge lies at the foot of ancient fossilised dunes. Enjoy the relaxed and friendly ambience while cooling off at the pool, watching gemsbok arrive at the waterhole to drink, walking the trails into the dunes or dining in the cosy restaurant. Spend 2 nights here on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis with a half-day Sossuvlei excursion included. 

Days 4 to 6 – The Delight Swakopmund

Head towards where the Atlantic Ocean meets the desert at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Explore the area with guided 4×4 Namib Desert Tours into the desert, take a walk to find the Welwitschia plant, and visit Sandwich Harbour where the dunes meet the sea and be driven along the narrow stretch of sand. 

The Delight is conveniently located within short walking distance of the ‘Mole’, and is a modern, uplifting and inviting hotel that is the ideal base for your stay.  Spend 2 nights at The Delight, on a bed-and-breakfast basis.

Days 6 to 8 – Palmwag Lodge, Damaraland

Today, head off early along the Skeleton Coast to the Cape Cross Seal colony. Continue along the coast for a while before turning inland. 

Between Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast, where the flat-topped Etendeka mountains and the carpet of rich red rock greet the tributaries of the Uniab River, lies Palmwag Lodge and Camp, overlooking the sweeping northern Damaraland landscape peppered with green euphorbias.

Feel the freedom of the north-western corner of Namibia, one of Africa’s last wildernesses, a refuge for black rhinos and lions, and home to the famous desert elephant that follow the ephemeral rivers spanning the land like arteries of life. 

Join a guided hike, a day or morning of exploration, a sleep-out or a sundowner drive in the 582 000-hectare Palmwag Concession, a vast conservation area with an abundance of wildlife. Palmwag collaborates with neighbouring conservancies, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and Save the Rhino Trust to safeguard this rich wild heritage, offering guests extraordinary unrivalled African experiences.

Days 8 to 11 – Etosha Safari Lodge, Etosha National Park

Today is an easy drive to the wildlife capital of Namibia, the Etosha National Park. You will spend 3 nights on a dinner bed and breakfast basis at Etosha Safari Camp, located just south of the Andersson Gate of Etosha. 

Etosha Safari Lodge has amazing views, a spacious deck- and dining area and airy rooms with private verandas. The rooms are located on a hillock, overlooking magnificent views, with Etosha National Park in the distance. Rooms have twin beds, en suite bathrooms (showers), and a small veranda. All rooms have air-conditioners and complimentary tea/coffee facilities.

Explore the national park on your own or join a knowledgeable guide on a drive, they are familiar with the waterholes and the animals that frequent them. Take this opportunity to be introduced to African wildlife from the comfortable seat of a game vehicle. Early morning or late afternoon visits, in accordance with the Andersson Gate times, provide the best game viewing.

Days 15 – Windhoek

Return to Windhoek today. After dropping your car off you will be transferred to the international airport for onward travel. We do not recommend departing on a flight earlier than about 4pm.
