LUXURY NAMIBIA SELF DRIVE SAFARI

This is an epic self-drive safari in Nambia! Staying at the best safari lodges in Namibia and traversing the country in your own 4×4 creates an outstanding safari that includes incredible night skies, grand vistas, unusual wildlife sightings and more.  We have slowed the pace on this trip and included 3 nights at the best spots in Namibia. 

On this 15-day safari around Namibia, you will experience the varied landscapes that this beautiful country has to offer.  Equipped with a rugged 4×4’s you will start your journey in Windhoek, the capital city.  From there you will head south to the Sossusvlei region for 3 nights. Staying at Little Kulala Camp, you have direct access with your guide into the park to see the enormous dunes and Dead Vlei. Enjoy walks, guided drives, fat-bike trips, quad biking and more. 

Depart Sossusvlei for the Namibian coast where you can experience the area and visit Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, for 2 nights. Follow the desolate Skeleton Coast for a while until you turn inland to Damaraland where you will spend 3 nights at the stunning Onduli Ridge Camp. Search for desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife,  walks, night drives, see the San rock art and more. 

Continue east to Etosha National Park where you will spend 3 nights in Ongava Game Reserve on the border of the park at Anderssons at Ongava Lodge. Spend your days in the Etosha National Park with picnic lunches, exploring the area at your own pace.  

On your way back to Windhoek, spend a night at TimBila Nature Reserve in TimBila Safari Lodge This is a conservation hotspot of rescued animals either from the sale or from conflict. 

On your last day, return your car to the rental agency in the city who will then drop you at the airport for your onward travel.

Day by Day itinerary

Days 1 to 2 – Olive Exclusive, Windhoek

As with most safaris that start in Windhoek, you need to overnight in or near Windhoek. It takes a while to land, meet your transfer and head into town to pick up your car. Upon collection of your 4×4 rental, you will then head to the Olive Exclusive for your overnight stay.  Spend the day exploring Windhoek and its curious mix of local and Germanic influences. 

The Olive Exclusive is an intimate boutique hotel in a tranquil corner of Windhoek that embodies the very essence of chic comfort. Each suite is individually decorated to reflect the different regions in Namibia, and each has its own lounge area with a fireplace and dining room, for private dining.

Days 2 to 5 – Little Kulala, Sossusvlei

Head south along a mix of tarred and gravel roads to the Namib Desert, the Kulala Wilderness Reserve and Little Kulala Camp. Explore Sossusvlei with a guide, go on drives through the reserve, quad bike or fat bike, walk or soar above the desert in a hot air balloon.

On the reserve, you can search for the desert-adapted animals which include ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyena and occasionally the brown hyena. Keep your eyes peeled for the smaller species like foxes jackals and aardwolf along with the host of insects, reptiles and rodents. 

Little Kulala has 11 luxury suites each under thatch, with a private deck, covered sala and private plunge pool. Each beautiful suite also boasts a private rooftop area for a sleep-out under the stars or a romantic meal and star gazing.  Spend 3 nights in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve at Little Kulala Camp, with all your meals, local drinks and activities. Hot Air balloon rides over Sossusvlei are an optional extra. 

Day 5 to 7 – Strand Hotel, Swakopmund

Head towards where the Atlantic Ocean meets the desert at Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Explore the area with guided 4×4 Namib Desert Tours into the desert, take a walk to find the Welwitschia plant, and visit Sandwich Harbour where the dunes meet the sea and be driven along the narrow stretch of sand. 

Spend 2 nights at The Strand Hotel in Swakopmund. Perfectly located along the mole (promenade) in Swakopmund, The Strand has restaurants, a spa, a bar and brewing hall, a deli and more. Your luxury suite overlooks the ocean and your rate includes breakfast. 

Day 7 to 10 – Onduli Ridge, Damaraland

Onwards to Etosha National Park! Located on the southern border of Etosha is the private Ongava Reserve, just outside of Anderssons Gate.  Ongava concentrates on conservation with the Ongava Research Centre, which takes a deeper look into Rhino genetics and boasts an interactive visitors centre. Guests can 

Spend 3 nights at Anderssons at Ongava on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis so you can head into the Etosha National Park on your own. Or upgrade to the fully inclusive rate and enjoy guided drives in Etosha and on the reserve, guided walks and rhino walks. 

Each luxurious suite at Anderssons at Ongava uses natural elements to create a spacious area with a large private deck offering panoramic views of the landscape. Each room has an ensuite with both indoor and outdoor showers. There is a waterhole, and photographic hide which provided eye-level views of the prolific wildlife that comes to drink, and a pool for guests to enjoy. 

Days 10 to 14 –  Andersson’s at Ongava, Etosha

Onwards to Etosha National Park! Days 14 to 15 – Timbila Safari Lodge

Depart Etosha back towards Windhoek, stopping for the night at the TimBila Nature Reserve. Timila creates a conflict-free environment for wildlife, alongside the Naankuse Foundation. The reserve works with communities to educate and with conservation organisations in Nambiab to rehome wildlife that encroaches into settlements, has been rehabilitated after an injury and more. 

An Ecologist led guiding team ensures monitoring of species and individual animals with guest participation which helps us understand their needs.

Each of the tented safari suites at TimBila Safari Lodge has wood-fired hot tubs and stargazing beds. Each suite is ensuite and has a pair of binoculars to use while in camp. A heated infinity pool, wellness centre and spa make TimBila a perfect place to end your Luxury Namibia Self Drive Safari

Days 15 – Windhoek

Continue to Windhoek where you will return your dusty hired 4×4. After this, you will be transferred to the airport for your onward travel.
