LUXURY KENYA CONSERVATION SAFARI

Explore some of the most remote and rewarding wildlife areas on this Luxury Kenya Conservation Safari. Visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in the northern Samburu region, patrol with wildlife warriors as they protect the rhinos of Laikipia and game watch in the magnificent Masai Mara.

This safari starts in the north of the country, in the Samburu region and the lands of the Namunyak Wildlife Conversation Trust.  An area of approximately 850,000 acres lies folded around the southern corner of the fabled Mathews Mountain Range of northern Kenya.  A conservation success story, today there are thousands of elephants in the area, up from zero in the late ’70s.

Other wildlife species include leopards, close-up sightings of the normally extremely shy lesser kudu antelope, African wild dogs and buffalo, giraffe, gerenuk, impala and warthogs which are now regularly seen on game drives and bush walks.

This area is home to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, a community-owned and run elephant sanctuary. Visit Reteti on this safari and meet the orphaned elephants and see how the team runs the sanctuary.

From Samburu, you will drive to the vast Laikipia area and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. One of the original rhino sanctuaries in Kenya, Lewa Rhino Sanctuary was fenced in the 80s to protect the rhinos. Today the fences are down between the Lewa and Borana Conservancies creating one of the most important rhino sanctuaries in Africa. On your visit to Lewa, you can visit the headquarters to see how the sanctuary runs, head out on walks and game drives or explore the wider area.

From Lewa House, you will fly south to the Masai Mara and the private Mara North Conservancy. Serian Camp overlooks the Mara River, which can be a calm or raging body of water, depending on the time of year. Enjoy private guiding at Serian in the heart of big cat and epic game viewing territory.

Day by Day itinerary

Days 1 to 4 – Sarara Camp, Namunyak Wildlife Conversation Trust

This trip starts at Wilson Airport with a charter flight to the Samburu National Park and the private Namunyak Wildlife Conversation Trust. You will be met and transferred through the park to Sarara Camp.
Owned and run by the Samburu Community, Sarara Camp and the Samburu region are home to an enormous elephant population.

Explore the diverse area on game drives with the Samburu Guides. Join the Samburu ladies to do some beading and visit the singing wells and honour an age-old tradition. Day and night game drives are also available, with good game viewing.

Visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, designed to rescue and release orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, whilst creating much-needed benefits to the local people that live alongside them.

Sarara Camp is built to take advantage of the beautiful panoramic views of northern Kenya. The infinity pool is built into natural rock and overlooks a very active waterhole which attracts elephants almost daily. Sarara Camp’s spacious luxury tents boast gorgeous views. The bathrooms are ensuite with an outdoor shower.

Days 04 to 07 – Lewa House, Lewa Conservancy

Enjoy the countryside as you make your way from Sarara and drive to Lewa House, a few hours away on a good road. Located in the heart of the Lewa Conservancy, on top of a hill, the delightful Lewa House has beautiful views of Mount Kenya, Matthews Range and the sacred Ol Olokwe mountain in the north. Enjoy game drives and walks with qualified gues, visit the Lewa Conservancy control centre, see the endangered black rhino or take a visit to the nearby Ngare Ndara Forest Reserve. There are community projects to visit as well.

The main area has a large sitting area with a fireplace, dining area and open shaded verandah. A large inviting swimming pool is nearby with excellent views over the savannah and the lush gardens have places to sit quietly or enjoy an al fresco breakfast.

Stay in a family cottage or an Earhpod, built along the hillside overlooking the wilderness. Family cottages are stone and thatch, with 2 bedrooms and a shared verandah. The Earthpods blend into the landscape, with curved walls creating a comfortable atmosphere inside. Ensuite bathrooms have a shower and bath, while some rooms have an outside bath to laze in while watching the wildlife below.

Days 07 to 10 – Serian Camp “The Original”, Mara North Conservancy

After breakfast you will board your light aircraft flight south to the Masai Mara! Spend 3 nights at the wonderful Serian Camp, located along the Mara River in the Mara North Conservancy.  Serian was the first camp Alex Walker built. The Mara River is the lifeblood for the Masai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti to the South.

Each party of guests is assigned their own local qualified guide and vehicle for the duration of their stay. This allows you to set your daily schedule how you wish! Serian has a smaller private tract of land right around the camp where bush walks can be conducted, from short walks to longer walks where the guide is armed. You can also head out on a night drive with Serian.

The main area and the rooms overlook the Mara River and the Olooloo Escarpment. The central dining area leads from the sitting area and there are quiet nooks to enjoy the views. Each of the tents is found along a rocky pathway, and are set on wooden platforms or cement plinths. The tents overlook the river and are large and open. Expect Victorian-style four-poster beds, a sitting area and the deck has chairs to sit on and enjoy the views. Each of the tents has a unique bathroom set up, an ensuite bathroom and a separate bush bathroom with a glorious bathtub with a view.

On your last morning, you will be taken to the airstrip for your flight to Wilson Airport for your onward travel.

Top Tip – Many guests opt to extend their stay in the Masai Mara by staying in another area, like Serians Nkorombo Camp in the Masai Mara National Reserve, or in one of the other conservancies.
